1 ὄσον
ὄσον, ep. ὅσσος, 1) relativ. Correlativ zu πόσος, sowohl von der Größe, so groß wie, als vom Raum, so weit wie, von der Zeit, so lange als, und von der Zahl, so viel wie, auch vom Grade der Kraft und Anstrengung, so sehr wie, quantus; dem demonstrativen τόσος entsprechend, τόσσον ἔνερϑ' Ἀΐδεω, ὅσον οὐρανός ἐστ' ἀπὸ γαίης, so weit der Himmel von der Erde ist, Il. 8, 16; οὔ μοι Τρώων τόσσον μέλει ἄλγος ὀπίσσω, ὅσσον σεῖο, nicht so sehr wie dein Schmerz, 6, 454; οὐ μέντοι ἐγὼ τόσον αἴτιός εἰμι, ὅσσον οἱ ἄλλοι, Il. 21, 371; u. umgestellt, αἴϑ' ὅσον ἥσσων εἰμί, τόσον σέο φέρτερος εἴην, 16, 722; χρόνον τοσοῦτον, εἰς ὅσον, Soph. VII, 533 e; – häufiger ohne das Demonstratvum, πρῶτον μὲν κατὰ πυρκαϊὴν σβέσαν αἴϑοπι οἴνῳ, ὅσσον ἐπὶ φλὸξ ἦλϑε, so weit die Flamme gekommen war, Il. 23, 251; βόϑρον ὄρυξ' ὅσσον τε πυγούσιον ἔνϑα καὶ ἔνϑα, so groß wie eine Elle, Od. 11, 25, öfter; πᾶν ὅσον, Hes. Prom. 978; πάντων, ὅσ' ἐστί, χρημάτων ὑπέρτερον, Soph. Ant. 680; und ohne πᾶς, ὅσοις δικαστῶν τόδ' ἐπέσταλται τέλος, Aesch. Eum. 713, vgl. Ag. 362; πάντα ποιήσειν, ὅσα δέοι, Xen. An. 2, 1, 2. – Nach dem geläufigen ὅσον χρόνον wird auch gesagt ὅσσαι νύκτες τε καὶ ἡμέραι ἐκ Διός εἰσιν, d. i. alle Nächte und Tage, so viel sind, Od. 14, 93; u. so ὅσοι μῆνες, Dem. 24, 142. – Die nähere Bestimmung wird im accus. angegeben, ὅσην δεῖ τὸ μέγεϑος τὴν πόλιν ποιεῖν, d. i. wie groß, Plat. Rep. IV, 423 b. – Eine bei οἷος erwähnte Attraktion findet auch hier statt, τὸ μὲν ἄμμες ἐΐσκομεν εἰςορόωντες ὅσσον ϑ' ἱστὸν νηὸς ἐεικοσόροιο, Od. 9, 321, für τοσοῦτον, ὅσος ἱστός ἐστι, wie 10, 113 τὴν δὲ γυναῖκα εὗρον ὅσην τε ὄρεος κορυφήν, sie fanden sie so groß, wie ein Berggipfel ist; Her. στρατοῦ μοῖραν, ὅσην δή κοτε ἔχων, wie groß er immer war, 1, 157, und ἐπὶ μισϑῷ ὅσῳ δή, eigtl. τοσούτῳ, ὅσος δὴ ἦν, 1, 160, vgl. unten ὅσον. – Mit der bei ὅς u. οἷος erwähnten Umstellung des Objects, ὁρᾷς οὖν ἡμᾶς, ὅσοι ἐσμέν, Plat. Rep. I, 327 c. – Auch der unter ὅς erwähnte Fall, daß ein anderer Casus des Demonstrativs vor ὅσος zu ergänzen ist, kommt vor, λαβόντες ὅσοι ἦσαν βόες, Xen. An. 7, 8, 16. – C. gen., ὅσον πένϑεος Il. 11, 658, ὅσοι ἵππων 5, 267; oft in Prosa, τῶν νέων ὅσοι ἀγαϑοί, Plat. Rep. V, 468 c, ὅσα φανερὰ γῆς τε καὶ οὐρανοῦ Soph. 232 c. – Beim superlat. zur Verstärkung (vgl. unten ὅσον); so ὅσας ἂν πλείστας δύναιντο καταστρέφεσϑαι, Her. 6, 44; ἄγων στρατιὰν ὅσην πλείστην ἐδύνατο, Thuc. 7, 21; öfter bei Sp., wie Pol., vgl. οἷος u. ὡς. Aehnlich ist ὅσον τάχος, Ar. Thesm. 727, so schnell wie möglich. – Auf τοσοῦτον bezogen, welches auch ausgelassen werden kann, wird es auch mit dem inf. verbunden, wie ὥςτε, ἡ μὲν ἔφϑασεν τοσοῦτον, ὅσον Πάχητα ἀνεγνωκέναι τὸ ψήφισμα, Thuc. 3, 49; ἐλείπετο τῆς νυκτός, ὅσον σκοταίους διελϑεῖν τὸ πεδίον, Xen. An. 4, 1, 5, es blieb so viel übrig, daß sie im Finstern durch die Ebene kamen. Vgl. unten ὅσον. – 2) Steht πᾶς nicht dabei, so drückt ἄν mit dem Conj. eine bedingte, unbestimmte Allgemeinheit aus, ὅσ' ἂν ϑέλῃς κακά, Soph. Phil. 64, vgl. O. R. 1129 O. C. 1630; ὅσον ἂν ᾖ πού τι φλαῦρον, Plat. Soph. 227 d; ὅσον ἂν ἕκαστος βούληται, Conv. 176 e; στρατοπεδευσώμεϑα προελϑόντες ὅσον ἂν δοκῇ καιρὸς εἶναι, Xen. An. 6, 1, 14, öfter, u. Folgde; – wofür in der indirecten Rede u. in Beziehung auf die Vergangenheit der opt. eintritt, ὅσα τῷ σώματι αὐτοῦ κόσμον πέμποι τις, περὶ τούτων λέγειν αὐτὸν ἔφασαν, Xen. An. 1, 9, 23, öfter; aber auch mit ἄν u. opt. (opt. potent.), 1, 5, 9, wo Krüger zu vergleichen, der es aus einer Handschrift auch 5, 4, 25 zugesetzt hat. – 3) zum Ausdruck einer indirecten Frage und bes. eines Ausrufs der Verwunderung, ὁρᾷς, Ὀδυσσεῦ, τὴν ϑεῶν ἰσχύν, ὅση, wie groß die Macht der Götter ist, Soph. Ai. 118; ὅσον ἦν κέρδος σιγῇ κεύϑειν, Trach. 984, vgl. El. 961; εἰς ὅσον κλύδωνα συμφορᾶς ἐλήλυϑεν, O. R. 1527; ὅσον τι δένδρεον γίγνεται ἐπιστάμενος, Her. 1, 193, vgl. 7, 236; auch mit τίς, μὴ πύϑῃ, ὅσοι τινὲς ἐόντες, 7, 102; χῶμα ἄξιον ϑωύματος μέγαϑος καὶ ὕψος ὅσον τί ἐστι, 1, 185, wie groß es ist, wo man wie bei οἷος (s. oben) es auch auflösen kann: ὅτι τόσον ἐστί; vgl. τὸν γενόμενον οἱ προςήκοντες ὀλοφύρονται, ὅσα μιν δεῖ ἀναπλῆσαι κακά, was für große Leiden er ertragen muß, d. i. daß er so Großes erdulden müsse, 5, 4, vgl. 2, 175; vgl. noch Plat. τὸ γῆρας ὑμνοῦσιν ὅσων κακῶν σφίσιν αἴτιον Rep. I, 329 b, οὐδ' ὅσους πόδας εἶχεν εἰδότες VII, 522 d. – Daraus hat sich die Verbindung ϑαυμαστὰ ὅσα, wie mir um quantum, es ist zu verwundern, wie viel, gebildet, Plat. Hipp. mai. 282 c, ὅλον μένει ἀμήχανον ὅσον χρόνον Phaed. 80 d; ἀμηχάνῳ δὴ ὅσῳ πλεῖον νικήσει Rep. IX, 588 a. – Vgl. noch Eur. Suppl. 66, μετάδος δ', ὅσσον ἐπαλγῶ μελέα τῶν φϑιμένων, da ich so sehr betraure. Geradezu für das Demonstrativ τόσον soll es bei Theocr. 4, 39 stehen: ὅσον αἶγες ἐμὶν φίλαι, ὅσσον ἀπέσβας, wo aber einige mss. für das zweite τόσσον haben und sich bes. die Aenderung φίλα empfiehlt. In B. A. 4, 20 wird auch ἀνεβόησεν οὐράνιον ὅσον angeführt. – 4) sehr gew. wird ὅσον, p. auch ὅσα, Il. 23, 431, adverbial gebraucht, von der Stimme so laut, vom Raume soweit, von der Zahl so vi el, von der Zeit so lange, ὅσον τε, soweit als, 10, 351. 23, 327 Od. 10, 113, Hes. O. 681. – Steht die Bestimmung des Raumes im accus. dabei, so nimmt es die Bedeutung ungefähr an, ὅσον τ' ὄργυιαν, Od. 9, 325. 10, 167, ὅσον τε πυγούσιον, 10, 517. 11, 25, ὅσον τ' ἐπὶ ἥμισυ, ungefähr bis zur Hälfte, 13, 114; ξύλα ὅσον τε διπήχεα, Her. 2, 96; νεκρὸν ξύλινον, μέγαϑος ὅσον τε πηχυαῖον ἢ δίπηχυν, 2, 78; u. häufig ὅσον τε δέκα στάδια, 9, 57, vgl. ὅσον τε ἐπὶ τρεῖς ἡμέρας, 2, 5. 30; ὅσον δύ' ἢ τρία στάδια, Plat. Phaedr. 229 c; Xen. oft u. Folgde, ὅσον εἴκοσι πόδας ἀπέστη, Pol. 39, 1, 3. – Τοσοῦτον διαφέρειν – ὅσον entspricht einander Xen. Cyr. 8, 1, 4; ὅσον αἱ ἄλλαι ἡδοναὶ ἀπομαραίνονται, τοσοῦτον αὐξάνονται, Plat. Rep. I, 328 d; u. so bes. im compar., wo aber ὅσῳ – τοσούτῳ, um so viel – als, je – desto, üblicher ist, ὅσῳ δὲ μᾶλλον πιστεύω, τοσούτῳ μᾶλλον ἀπορῶ, II, 368 b, vgl. Phaedr. 244 d Euthyphr. 11 d; ὅσῳ μὲν ἂν ϑᾶττον ἔλϑοι, τοσούτῳ ἀπαρασκευαστοτέρῳ βασι λεῖ μαχεῖσϑαι, Xen. An. 1, 5, 9, öfter; u. beim superl., ἀνακραγόντες ὅσον ἐδύναντο μέγιστον, so laut wie sie konnten, 4, 5, 18, öfter, u. A. Auch ohne den comparat. brauchen Sp., wie Pol., so ὅσῳ, wo man μᾶλλον ergänzt, 1, 45, 9; 2, 30, 3 ist ὅσῳ γυμνὰ καὶ μείζω τὰ σώματα ἦν, τοσούτῳ μᾶλλον verbunden. – An die oben erwähnte Attraktion reihen sich Verbindungen wie ἀλλ' ὅσον ἐς Σκαιάς τε πύλας καὶ φηγὸν ἵκανεν, er kam so weit, wie es bis zum skaiischen Thor ist, nur bis zu dem Thore, Il. 9, 354, u. so öfter; ὅσον μόνον, nur, Thuc. 6, 105; πρόβατα, ὅσον ϑύματα, Xen. An. 7, 8, 19, Schaafe, nur zu den Opfern hinreichend; ὅσον παιδείας χάριν, Plat. Gorg. 485 a; ὅσον μὲν ἐμαυτῷ μόνον ἱκανός, Phaedr. 242 c, vgl. Rep. X, 607 a; νῦν δὲ μόνον ὅσον τινὰ τόπον αὐτῶν δι' ὀλίγων ἐπεξέλϑωμεν, Legg. VI, 778 c; τὰ κρέα (διεῤῥίπτει) ὅσον μόνον γεύσασϑαι ἑαυτῷ καταλιπών, Xen. An. 7, 3, 22, nur zum Kosten; u. Sp., ὅσον εἶπα, ich habe es nur gesagt, Diosc. 4 (XII, 169); vgl. Theocr. 1, 45. 25, 73; Luc. verbindet so auch das adj., ὀλίγους ὅσους κοφίνων ἐκφορήσας, nur wenige, Alex. 1, womit man Dem. 27, 23 ὅσα ἔνια vergleichen kann; τυτϑὸν ὅσον Theocr. 1, 45. – Ὅσον οὐ, auch in einem Worte ὁσονού geschrieben, wie das lat, tantum non, fast, beinahe, ἐλέγετο δὲ ὅτι καὶ ὁ ναύαρχος διάδοχος ὅσον οὐ παρείη, Xen. An. 7, 2, 5; ἐνόμιζε δὲ ὅσον οὐκ ἤδη ἔχειν τὴν πόλιν, Hell. 5, 2, 16, wie Eur. ἥξει δ' Ὀδυσεὺς ὅσον οὐκ ἤδη, Hec. 138; vgl. Pol. 4, 41, 14. 9, 26, 9; – ὅσον ὅσον, ein klein wenig, Ar. Vesp. 213; Philet. 18; οὐδ' ὅσον, erkl. Phryn. in B. A. 3, 24 οὐδὲ τὸ βραχύτατον; – ὅσον αὐτίκα, ὅσον οὔπω, in nicht gar langer Zeit, gar bald, oft bei Pol., vgl. 2, 52, 7. 5, 110, 4; Jac. Ach. Tat. p. 883. – Besonders zu merken ist ὅσον cum inf., nur in soweit daß; ὅσον γ' ἔμ' εἰδέναι, Ar. Nubb. 1233, wie Plat. Theaet. 145 a, vgl. ὅσον μόνον τὴν δυςχέρειαν κατασβέσαι, nur so viel, um zu verlöschen, Prot. 334 c. – Eben so mit einem nomen absolut, ὅσα ἄνϑρωποι, in so weit, in so fern sie Menschen sind, Plat. Rep. V, 467 c; vgl. ὅσα κατὰ τὴν ἐμὴν ἡλικίαν, Is. 7, 41. – Genauer mit Präpositionen bestimmt, εἰς ὅσον ἀνϑρώπῳ δυνατὸν μάλιστα, so weit es nur einem Menschen möglich ist, Plat. Phaedr. 277 a; ἐφ' ὅσον, Polit. 268 b, wie Xen. An. 6, 1, 19; καϑ' ὅσον, Plat. Prot. 351 c u. öfter; καϑ' ὅσον μή, außer daß, Phaed. 64 d; πρᾷος ὅσα μὴ σφόδρα μισοτύραννος, Plut. Timol. 3.

ὁ, [full] ἡ, τό, is, when thus written,A demonstr. Pronoun.B in [dialect] Att., definite or prepositive Article.C in [dialect] Ep., the so-called postpositive Article, = relative Pronoun, ὅς, ἥ, ὅ.—The nom. masc. and fem. sg. and pl., ὁ, ἡ, οἱ, αἱ, have no accent in codd. and most printed books, exc. when used as the relative ; but ὁ, ἡ, οἱ, αἱ differ only in writing from ὃ, ἣ, οἳ, αἳ ; the nom. forms of the article are said by Hdn.Gr.1.474 to be oxytone, and by A.D.Pron.8.7 not to be enclitic. The forms τῶν, τοῖς, ταῖς were barytone (i. e. τὼν, τοὶς, ταὶς ) in [dialect] Aeol. acc. to Aristarch. ap. A.D.Synt.51.26. For οἱ, αἱ some dialects (not Cypr., cf. Inscr.Cypr.135.30H., nor Cret., cf.Leg.Gort. 5.28, nor Lesbian, cf. Alc.81, Sapph.Supp.5.1 ) and Hom. have τοί, ταί (though οἱ, αἱ are also found in Hom.): other Homeric forms are gen. sg. τοῖο, gen. and dat. dualτοῖιν Od.18.34
, al.: gen. pl. fem. τάων [pron. full] [ᾱ], dat. τοῖσι, τῇς and τῇσι, never ταῖσι or ταῖς in Hom.— In [dialect] Dor. and all other dialects exc. [dialect] Att. and [dialect] Ion. the fem. forms preserve the old [pron. full] ᾱ instead of changing it to η, hence [dialect] Dor. etc. ἁ, τάν, τᾶς ; the gen. pl. τάων contracts in many dialects to τᾶν ; the gen. sg. is in many places τῶ, acc. pl. τώς, but Cret., etc., τόνς (Leg.Gort.7.7, al.) or τός (ib.3.50, al.) ; in Lesbian [dialect] Aeol. the acc. pl. forms are τοὶς, ταὶς, IG12(2).645 A13, B62 ; dat. pl. τοῖς, ταῖς (or τοὶς, ταὶς, v. supr.), ib.645 A8, ib.1.6 ; ταῖσι as demonstr., Sapph. 16. The [dialect] Att. Poets also used the [dialect] Ion. and [dialect] Ep. forms τοῖσι, ταῖσι ; and in Trag. we find τοὶ μέν.., τοὶ δέ.., for οἱ μέν.., οἱ δέ.., not only in lyr., as A.Pers. 584, Th. 295, 298 ;οἱ μέν.. τοὶ δ' S.Aj. 1404

Θράσυλος in Id.8.104, with ὁ Θ. ib. 105 ; or when the person spoken of is to be specially distinguished, Ζεύς, ὅστις ὁ Ζεύς whoever this Zeus is, E.Fr. 480 ; and therefore properly omitted when a special designation follows, as Σωκράτης ὁ φιλόσοφος: seldom in Trag. with pr. nn., save to give pecul. emphasis, like Lat. ille, ὁ Λάϊος, ὁ Φοῖβος, S.OT 729, El.35, etc.: later, however, the usage became very common (the Homeric usage of ὁ with a pr. n. is different, v. (s.v.l.).D CRASIS OF ARTICLE:a [dialect] Att. ὁ, ἡ, τό, with [pron. full] ᾰ make ᾱ, as ἁνήρ, ἁλήθεια, τἀγαθόν, τᾄτιον; so οἱ, αἱ, τά, as ἅνδρες, τἀγαθά; also τοῦ, τῷ, as τἀγαθοῦ, τἀγαθῷ: ὁ, τό, οἱ, before e gives ου, οὑξ, οὑπί, οὑμός, τοὔργον, οὑπιχώριοι, etc.; also τοῦ, as τοὐμοῦ, τοὐπιόντος; but ἅτερος, θάτερον ([pron. full] ¯ ?ὁX?ὁX), [dialect] Ion. οὕτερος, τοὔτερον (v. ἕτερος), [dialect] Att. fem. ἡτέρα, dat. θητέρᾳ (v. ἕτερος); τῷ loses the iota, τὠμῷ, τὠπιόντι: ὁ, τό, before ο gives ου, as Οὁδυσσεύς, Οὑλύμπιος, τοὔνομα: ὁ, τό, etc., before αυ gives ᾱυ, αὑτός, ταὐτό, ταὐτῷ (freq. written ἁτός, etc. in Inscrr. and Pap.); so τὰ αὐτά=ταὐτά, αἱ αὐταί= αὑταί: ἡ before εὐ gives ηὑ, as ηὑλάβεια: τῇ before ἡ gives θη, as θἠμέρᾳ: τὸ before ὑ gives θου, as θοὔδωρ for τὸ ὕδωρ.
